You wouldn't know it, Reader Nation, because I was absent for a complete month. But the truth, is, September DID happen, and it was awesome! I'm going to give you the recap, in installations, picture-style.
September 5, 2015: Wedding Rehearsal
The rehearsal was a blur of neck-wear and rehearsing. The pearls have a sweet story: My dad bought them for my mom to wear on their wedding day (aww) (something old!).
The tie also has a sweet story: My dad got it for free from a WaWa because he went there so often that he... won it? picked it as a prize? had a punch card that said "Congrats, now you get this along with a healthy dose of public ridicule"? As you can tell, I'm not sure of the story on how exactly that tie came to exist in the Firth household of my youth. But I know some things:
1. I put that tie on Teddy, when I was between the ages of 5 and 7, in preparation for stuffed animal weddings that typically ended in haste as we realized that the floor was, indeed, lava. By we, I mean me and my stuffed animal family.
2. We had WaWa Hoagies, like, every weekend of my childhood summers. Some people eat mashed potatoes as childhood comfort foods. I eat 6 inches of Italian cold cut on a roll from a combination gas station/convenience store that lets me place my order on a touch screen. It's the only time in my life that i still say "yes" to the lard-o gross-o that is "A Little Bit of Mayo."
3. That tie has velcro in the back. One step up from clip-on. Just as classy as a tie-it-yourselfer.
4. Why ISN'T there a Wawa in Atlanta? I guess that's not something I know, but more of a question that continues to bother me as I move around the city, settling for Jimmy Johns, even though I made a promise to myself long ago that I would never accept mediocrity. Yes, I did just take the struggle to find a good Hoagie that far across that line.
5. My grandmother approached me the day before the rehearsal and asked if it was going to be "very fancy" or not. I said that people could wear whatever they were most comfortable in, and that I would wear a dress. She said something like, "What about the men? Will the men be wearing suits?" I said maybe jackets, probably not ties. She said, "Oh, that's too bad. Your dad has a suit packed. He always looks so nice in a suit. I guess he won't be able to wear it. What a shame." You will notice a trend here about my Mom-mom as we move on. But my guess is, she didn't know that it was going to be this kind of suit. The kind of free-spirited suit that doesn't follow the oppressive rules of societal pressures. The kind of suit that chooses to celebrate the miracle of sandwiches.
Anyway, after we got The Great Necklace Debacle of 2015 figured out, and I gave props to my dad for his sweet tie, we got down to rehearsing.
You may or may not notice from the above photo, that among the fall trends present at our wedding, it was definitely hip to sport a baby bump.
The greatest thing about getting married was having so many people we love together in one place. I managed to avoid an awkward going-around-the-room toast, acknowledging everyone publicly for all of their accomplishments in life, but only barely.
And so that's it, a summary of September 5th. Doesn't do much to explain what happened in the rest of September; expect more to come!
Until Next Time,
K
